Diel Sampling All Day

Today- and into the night- the team is performing a second diel experiment. A 'diel experiment' follows and marks changes that occur during a 24-hr cycle. During our first diel field experiment we sampled through a hole in the ice off station every four hours from 9am until 9pm. Today we are heading out in the zodiacs to Station E at 9am, 1pm, 5pm, 9pm and hopefully 1am to collect plankton at 10m depth. From this data we hope to better understand how/if diatoms at this depth are changing during a 24 hour period. We filter the samples for chlorophyl, take fluorometer measurements to get a basic idea of how the plankton are physiologically (are they happy? stressed? photosynthesizing?)
